Mission StatementThe Athletic Training Education Program at Luther College seeks to develop scholars who have gained the knowledge, values, critical thinking and psychomotor skills necessary to perform the various roles of an athletic trainer in today’s world, with the ability to adapt to changes in the future. Goals: 1. To provide an instructional setting of challenge to motivate athletic training students to achieve their academic potential. 2. To staff the Athletic Training Education Program with personnel who are excellent role models for athletic training students in academic achievement, performance and personal conduct. 3. To maintain a facility that will be attractive to prospective athletic training students and conducive to effective teaching and learning. 4. To continue to improve each area of instruction by annual evaluations and modification of content and methodology as indicated. 5. To provide a positive setting for experiential learning through field experience assignments with the various athletic teams at Luther College. 6. To strive for a 100% success rate of athletic training students who sit for the BOC exams.
Objectives: 1. To annually attract eight prospective students to enroll at Luther College and declare a major in athletic training. 2. To annually graduate at least six students having completed a major in athletic training. 3. To develop athletic training students with a positive performance record on the NATA clinical proficiencies. 4. To develop athletic training students who consistently perform at a high level in the classroom to achieve a 2.3 cumulative grade point (4.0 scale). 5. To assist the athletic training student to master the educational competencies and clinical proficiencies of athletic training in an efficient and effective manner. 6. To continue to enhance the athletic training curriculum and resources in pursuit of CAATE accreditation of the Athletic Training Education Program at Luther College. 7. To attain and maintain CAATE accreditation of the Athletic Training Education Program at Luther College.
Outcomes: All graduates of the Luther College Athletic Training Education Program will possess entry-level knowledge, skills, and values necessary to: 1. Identify injury and illness risk factors that may be encountered by those involved in physical activity and to plan and implement a risk management and prevention program. 2. Understand the physiological responses of human growth and development and the progression of injuries, illnesses, and disease. 3. Assess acute and chronic injuries and illnesses of physically active people to determine proper care, referring the client to other medical and health care providers when appropriate. 4. Understand the indications, contraindications, precautions, interactions, and governing regulations of medications relevant to the treatment of injuries to, and illnesses of, the physically active person. 5. Plan, implement, document, and evaluate the efficacy of therapeutic modalities and therapeutic programs in the treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning of injuries and illnesses in the physically active person. 6. Recognize, treat, and appropriately refer, the general medical conditions and disabilities of those involved in physical activity. 7. Understand and recognize the nutritional aspects of athletes and physically active persons. 8. Recognize, intervene, and appropriately refer, harmful socio-cultural, mental, emotional, and physical behaviors of physically active individuals. 9. Develop, administer, and manage a health care facility and associated venues that provide health care to athletes and others involved in physical activity. 10. Understand professional responsibilities, avenues of professional development, and national and state regulatory standards for the practice of athletic training. |
